Weight Management

Surgical Treatment of Obesity
  - Introduction

Various Surgical procedures have been devised to reduce weight. They are categorised as such:

Restrictive operations:
In these operations the size of the stomach is restricted so that people feel full after only a small amount of food. This can be achieved by placing a band around the upper stomach or by stapling or dividing the stomach.

Malabsorptive operations:
In these operations, part of the bowel is bypassed leading to a reduction in the amount of food absorbed.

Combination operations:
These operations have a restrictive and malabsorptive component, such as a gastric bypass.

An experienced team of a surgeon, physician, anaesthetist, nurse specialists and dietician will help each individual to select the most suitable operation.
