Aneurysmal Disease
- Introduction
Although potentially very serious an aneurysm is simply a dilated blood vessel. Aneurysms may affect the abdominal aorta, hence the name an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Aortic aneurysms present as either an incidental finding, as part of a screening program, as a pulsating mass or as an acute rupture. Screening programs around the country have been set up to reduce the risk of rupture. They use ultrasound to identify or exclude aneurysms in populations know to be at risk.
